Final Thoughts

Actively participating in online research and journalism through blogging affected me in several ways. It taught me that there are many different ways to voice opinion, fact, and stories. It taught me to research different sites to learn what is fact and what is opinion. It also taught me what kind of sway people can have on others, just with words. Blogging allows anyone and everyone to voice their opinions on life, or just tell about their life, and all they need is for one person to read. I was very happy in doing this project and am better off in this field because of it.

This project was very worthwhile as a learning tool in this class. I felt like I was really able to learn about a new medium of journalism, and learn about the entire concept of journalism as well. It taught many things and showed students a method to get started on their career path in the journalism field.

My final thesis statement is that blogging, without a doubt, has significantly impacted the print journalism industry, and continues to do so with each new person who creates a blog. Blogging provides a new medium of journalism and allows stories and news to reach farther than ever before. It has raised new interest among people and has provided everyone with the ability to observe and report their views and opinions. Blogging has made journalism much more interactive than print journalism ever was. With that in mind, there can be no doubt that blogging has had more than a significant impact.

Thesis Holds its Ground

My original thesis that blogging impacts print journalism continues to hold its own. Blogging allows a wider view on journalism, and allows all sorts of people to express all sorts of ideas and views. It is a new era where everyone can write, and there is almost always someone to listen. Blogging has made it easier for people to interact and has made it easier for people to get their voices heard.

Vanity V. Information - Types of Personal Blogs

The first personal blog that I came across while researching them was a vanity blog. Titled “My Personal Blog” written by Willy Sudiarto Raharjo, this blog details every aspect of his life. He tells all about what he does during his day and even comments on what the temperature feels like to him. Lately he thinks that it is getting colder. His blog dates back to August of 2004 and he has consistently updated it with his personal experiences and things that influence him since then.

The second personal blog that I read was an informational blog. The blog is about a personal trainer named Steve Cork who works for EverydayAthletes.co.uk. In this blog Steve discusses what type of personal training he takes part in. He also gives advice to people on how they can exercise and get the results that they want. His blog is a personal one that gives insight on himself, as well as telling people about the specific field of fitness.

Both blogs are personal blogs that are centered on two individuals. Both blogs tell about the men’s lives. But the blogs are also extremely different from one another. Willy’s blog tells about all the little things in his life that most would not find any significance in. Steve’s blog tells about a specific aspect of his life, and then relates it to other people so that they may use it to help themselves. That is the difference between vanity blogs and information blogs. The information blogs are more useful as they are directly applied to specific areas of people life, in an attempt to help.

I feel that blogging does support this type of journalism. Blogging is meant for people to share whatever, whenever and however they want. Some have used it to tell others about the world, some have used it to teach, and others have used it as a key into their mind for others to see. Print journalism focuses on informing, blogging focuses on whatever the mind can create.

A good information blog contains information that can help people and focuses on a certain field for the people to research. The blog should make it easier for people to find what they want and teach them in a way that they can understand. A good vanity blog gives insight as to who the person is, what there likes and dislikes are, what they are doing with their lives, and what their goals and aspirations are. A good vanity blog really paints a picture of the individual, what they stand for, and who they really are.

Thesis Continues to Hold True

The research that I have continued to perform still strongly supports my thesis that blogging has impacted the print journalism industry. Just the fact that it what difficult to find a current Ezine because everyone was using blogs was enough evidence for me.

Blog V. Ezine

The news blog that I found, The Chronicle of Higher Education, was very interesting to me. The home page offers a variety of news to choose from, with a plethora of story links scattered about the page. The side bar offers a list categories that is very well organized, for people who have trouble finding what they want on the home page. You can look at Government and Politics, international, athletic, or even information technology news. There is even a section at the bottom of the side bar that allows the viewers to see corrections that the blog team had to make to their articles. Viewers can comment on stories and interact with one another about what they believe. Finally, most of the stories seem to be very up to date, with several stories already uploaded from this morning. Current news is important, and with this site you get current news from all different aspects of life.

It was very difficult for me to find an Ezine with news, especially any that were current, as it seems most places have switched to blogging. In the one that I found, American Journal, most of the stories came from February 2009, with one article added June 2009. The news was quite interesting however, and wasn’t news that you usually see. The American Journal focuses more on the news that gives America its culture and what the people in the country are like. It is more of an artsy cultural Ezine, but still very interesting and informative.

The blog and the Ezine that I came across were very different from one another. The blog was definitely more professional and effective, as it allowed the readers to interact with one another while they were learning about the world, and the news was all very current, unlike the Ezine. The Ezine was far easier for me to read, as it provided photographs on every story, to demonstrate what was being said. I love photographs and this made the stories more interesting to me. I guess that’s why I’m studying photojournalism.
The blog and Ezine did not cover the same current events, at least not that I could tell from the dates. The blog had a wide variety of important news that affects the people of the country, and the Ezine offered news that showed the character of the people of the country. I felt that both the blog and the Ezine were trustworthy, the Ezine for when it was posted of course. I don’t feel like a print source would be more credible, because it is the same information at first. If anything, the blog and Ezine are more credible because it allows the authors to update the information quickly if need be, where as once a print source is out, there is no changing it. The blog even takes it a step further by allowing people to comment, which could turn out to have people telling a side of the story that was otherwise unknown. The blog and the Ezine were both very nice to look at and browse through. However, it is clear that the blog is overtaking the Ezine in the world.
